Robert Anthony SalvatoreImage (born January 20, 1959) is a prolific American Speculative Fiction author from Leominster, Massachusetts.

Though known mainly for his licensed fiction and particularly as the creator of the Forgotten Realms character Drizzt Do'Urden, Salvatore also has a large library of original works to his name. Initially majoring in computer science, he changed his major to journalism after reading The Lord of the Rings. He published his first novel, The Crystal Shard, in 1988.

He is a big guy; he worked as a bouncer before becoming a full-time writer. He credits some of the way he writes fight scenes to this job.

Tropes common in Salvatore's writing:

  • Author Catchphrase: In a fight scene, expect to repeatedly see a target "blasted" by a strike. "That is no small thing" is also a common phrase in his novels.
  • Sci-Fi Writers Have No Sense of Scale: He is unfortunately responsible for the much-maligned 1.2 million clone troopers number for Attack of the Clones and related material, having interpreted "units" as "individual clones" in his novelization. In Vector Prime he similarly placed Sernpidal orbiting its sun at the same distance the Moon orbits Earth.
