The Magic Crown (Western Animation)
The Magic Crown, original Spanish name La Corona Mágica is a 1989 Spanish animated science-fiction/fantasy series created by Juan Ramon Pina.

The setting is an interplanetary civilisation in the Double Sun system, in which the planet Brigabor is the home of the heroes King Brigal and Prince Zalk, and the outer planets are ruled by the villains, led by Queen Idún and her grand vizier, Zohak. The stories combine a science-fiction premise of space travel and an evil empire with fantasy ideas such as magic powers and witches and wizards. As with several of other animations from the late 80s and early 90s, the villains are quite developed as characters.

A single season of 26 20-minute episodes was produced, and the series seems to have inspired an early computer game of the same name, and had its own line of promotional toys. Rather obscure, the dubbed episodes broadcast in the UK appear to have been lost, but the episodes can be found online in their original Spanish.

La Corona Mágica contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Adipose Rex: King Brigal has a large build.
  • The Apprentice: Hanstor, who is the apprentice of the sorcerer Rahman.
  • The Baroness: Queen Idún, who dresses sexily, has magic powers, and commands an evil army.
  • Big Bad: Queen Idun, monarch of the outer planets of the system.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: Zohak is noticeably shorter than others of his race, wears a monocle, pointy shoes, and a robe with a big collar and a knife tucked inside his cummerbund.
  • Cool Horse: Rahman creates a magic flying horse for King Brigal as a birthday gift.
  • Court Mage: The sorcerer Rahman is in the employ of King Brigal, and is the mentor of Hanstor.
  • The Dragon: Grand Vizier Zohak is Idún's right-hand man.
  • The Empire: The civilisation of the outer planets, ruled by Idún.
  • The Good Kingdom: The planet Brigabor, ruled by a benevolent king.
  • Laughably Evil: Zohak, or at least in the English dub broadcast in the UK.
  • MacGuffin: The eponymous magic crown, guarded by the protagonists and sought by the antagonists, contains magical powers that maintain balance in the hands of the heroes, or can be used for destruction if the villains get their hands on it.
  • Parrot Pet Position: Some of the heroes have pet squirrels or reptiles that ride around on their shoulders.
  • The Starscream: Zohak has his own ambitions and betrays and deceives Idún on a number of occasions. Eventually she exiles him.
  • Witch Classic: Idún has magical powers and in the first two episodes looks grotesque, but is transformed by Zohak into the younger form she maintains for the rest of the series.
