Catches and Misses
1) My partner has headed to Ohio to visit family and go to auto races over the next few weeks. In the meantime the drywall has been finished and ceiling texturing should get underway today.
I was amused when our downstairs neighbor asked my partner if he was running away. He has always packed our car full when taking a road trip. Several years ago he came up with the idea of leaving clothing and personal items at his sister's house so he wouldn't have to pack them when visiting. While this did mean a slightly less full car, it also meant a lot of duplicate purchases including heaters and fans.
Having recently cleared out his closet, he had some 10 bags of clothes he was taking there, to stash some for visits and then give away the rest. (He has enough t-shirts to clothe everyone in the surrounding buildings, though in fairness many were gifts). Plus, he and his nephew are going to do some operating on his current and former computers while he's there, so those were being loaded along with food for the stay, his work laptop, his CPAP, food for on the road consumption and hangers for all the clothing.
While doing so our neighbor came out to walk her dog and saw the Tetris-ing of the car, hence the question.
2) I am so fed up with CIBC bank. Last year I am fairly certain they never notified me that my CD was coming up for renewal, as with this latest one several notices were sent and I can't believe I would have missed those before. I apparently I had a date a week off in my spreadsheet and by the time I contacted them it had rolled over.
Since there was nothing I could do, I just fumed. This year their notices and my records had me checking rates well beforehand and they had an 18 month one with one of the better rates around. This would have been fairly simple had I not wanted to withdraw a small portion for some bills. I found out early on that I could not set up instructions for the CD until it had actually matured, and since it did this over a weekend, I'd have to wait until a weekday when this would become available.
After attempting to set up the instructions online in my account (which has the annoying habit of verifying me every single time I log in, no matter how many times I checkbox "trust this device") I found I couldn't because it had no links to my main bank. So I called and was told that they could not set up my bank for an ACH transfer because they didn't do them. For those who don't know, this a free way to transfer money electronically between banks (at least domestically) and I had never yet run into one which didn't.
The option was to wire me the money, but this is usually expensive. I asked to have a check sent. But she told me they could only send me a check if I were closing the account, and that they didn't charge for wiring money. Given I was already into the grace period after the CD matured, I was concerned about getting this done quickly. She assured me it could be done within two days, but I not only needed to enter the information in the form for wiring, but then I also had to wait for a call from the bank to confirm the information I wrote because if something was wire in error, done was done. It was an immediate transfer.
Half of this was a lie. I missed the initial call from the bank but was able to call back and confirm my identity. That was the actual reason for the call, because she never asked about my account, routing number or bank address at all! And then she assured me that with the funds sent, my CD would be rolled over to the new term and better rate.
This was also a lie. I discovered when the wire hit my bank account that while CIBC may not have charged me for the transfer my receiving bank did. Thank goodness it wasn't a large amount because the cost was set by the amount transferred! I logged in to send a message to customer service about this and was surprised to see a message alerting me to take action on my matured CD. Nothing had been done at all. Only once I filled out another form did the CD get rolled over, and a confirmation was emailed.
What's more, when I did so I had to check mark that I'd read their account agreement, which I scanned through. And in it, it said very clearly that I could withdraw money by check OR by wire.
3) Norway vs. Senegal. Senegal had an early scoring possibility but the keeper was there. Had the Senegalese player not fallen in the penalty box I suspect it would have been a goal.
Norway then had their moment at 36 minutes when a player was stymied by the keeper rushing him and the ball rebounding.
But then Norway was successful at 42 minutes. From what I could see it actually rebounded off the keeper into goal.
A somewhat frantic play at 48 minutes when the keeper came out of goal in a lackadaisical fashion to kick the ball back into play. But a Norwegian player was right there! Senegal then lost control of the ball which went wild after the Norwegian player tried to kick it to goal but it bounced off the goal post and was picked up by Norwegian players who circled it back to the goal. It was kicked in across to a Norwegian who headed it into goal. But the Senegal keeper just barely kept it on the goal line.
Norway got their second goal at 47 minutes with his team basically just out running and maneuvering the Senegal defense, which was tardy in getting back to goal.
A header by Senegal at 51 minutes was caught by the keeper, but it had been a near thing for Norway.
Just a minute later Senegal was trying again and this time kicked it past two defenders trying to crowd the Senegalese player. But he chipped it into the goal, even as he fell and the Norwegian keeper came out of goal.
At 57 minutes though, Norway was making another run on their goal. At first it looked like it was going to be headed out but the Senegalese player slipped. The Norwegian player managed to pass it to another in front of goal. A defender wasn't quick enough to block and the shot went over the keeper's jump.
At 91 minutes, Senegal had another chance with a kick deflected by the Norwegian keeper. Had another player been in the right spot, they would have had an excellent chance to score.
But at 92 minutes they got that second chance. This time a cross in was caught and passed to a player with a clear shot at goal. A defender slid in front of him and the keeper came out and slid as well but it was too late.
Late rally aside Senegal could not get that third goal in time.
Jordan versus Algeria. A lot of kicks to keepers in the first half. But at 35 minutes Jordan took the lead. Two passes in the penalty box and one kick right past defenders and keeper.
Algeria then got an equalizer at 68 minutes: a corner kick to a header past the diving keeper.
The keeper could be said to be at fault in their second goal as well at 81 minutes. Another corner kick to another header. This time though the ball dropped, bounced, and an Algerian player managed to tap it in.
There was a potential offside issue but the goal stood.
France versus Iraq. At 13 minutes in France scored. Mbappe was able to kick in from outside the penalty area.
After that it wasn't until the second half that he and France scored again at 53 minutes. In this case it was utter stupidity by Iraq. All this dilly-dallying in front of a goal never leads to good things. An Iraqi player kicked the ball to the keeper who missed it, it went to the feet of a French player in the box, who passed it to Mbappe who then simply kicked it in goal.
Iraq managed to stave off three more attempts in subsequent minutes. I noticed that at 65 minutes, the Iraqi keeper almost got France another goal when delaying in kicking the ball away, and a French player rushed him.
But just a minute later, it didn't matter because a distance shot got past the keeper.
That was the last chance that France had and Iraq never succeeded in landing a goal given the constant press on theirs.
Portugal versus Uzbekistan. Portugal's first goal at almost 6 minutes was a lovely piece of play. The Portuguese player managed to get just enough space to hit a cross, which Ronaldo, standing in front of goal, was able to extend his leg to reach and take it past the keeper who was far to the right, but still not fast enough to block.
Uzbekistan picked up a yellow card at 16 minutes and that gave Portugal a free kick which they shot into goal through the wall. I think the goal surprised everybody.
Uzbekistan managed to get a goal at 30 minutes but it was disallowed because of a foul just before the player who kicked the goal received the ball.
At 38 minutes there was a run down the field by three players, and a pass to Ronaldo who shot it in from distance.
At 50 minutes, Ronaldo was going to score but the keeper fell at his feet, tripping him, and nothing happened.
Keeper ran at him again at 57 minutes when he ran through the free kick wall and up to goal, once again putting him on the ground.
At 59 minutes though, a corner kick went to a large cluster in front of goal, and went in. It ended up being an own goal by Uzbekistan.
A Portuguese player got a yellow card at 67 minutes as a Uzbeki player went down to the ground.
Ronaldo was denied two more goals, one which missed the target and another which the keeper kept out.
He made another save at 83 minutes, but unfortunately too often the Uzbeki players could not make it down the field to play at the Portuguese goal. At 83 minutes, Portugal was already heading back and a cross from the side, which missed Ronaldo but was picked up by another Portuguese player, was shot past defenders and keeper into goal.
Watched England versus Ghana in full which was a snooze fest. The two players took a bad knock in the head for sure. But the decision to just delay play instead of going ahead and taking the hydration break made no sense to me. The commentator made a sly remark that it wasn't like we were missing a lot anyways, given the low gear of play in the first half to date.
England then picked up a yellow card for a tackle on a Ghanaian player at 40 minutes.
Ghana was mounting a strong defense keeping England from scoring, but well into the second half things were as dreary as the rain.
Ghana had a near chance at 78 minutes but delayed too long, and despite a big effort, were blocked from the goal.
Finally at 86 minutes there was a shot on goal that was saved by Ghana, and then quickly a second attack that looked like it was going to be in but it was a miss.
Final result nil-nil, and a big zero of a game at that. It seemed clear that Ghana was always playing for a tie and not a win.
Panama versus Croatia. Interesting that it was Panama in the first half who had two shots on goal, both stopped by the keeper. But it was Croatia at 53 minutes who actually got the goal. Accross to a kick with insufficient defenders and that was it.
Croatia wasted a second shot though, at 56 minutes, when the keeper was actually out of goal. He just didn't shoot quick enough.
Croatia defended well at 67 minutes, when three shots in a row were deflected by either a defender or the keeper.
Panama's shots were not accurate enough overall, but clearly Croatia didn't have that many opportunities either to have a final score of just one to zero.
Colombia versus Democratic Republic of Congo. Colombia had an early charge at the goal and just missed. At 7 minutes Colombia had another goal but it was disallowed for offside.
A Colombian player got yellow carded at 55 minutes, and well deserved for the way he shoved down the Congo player.
At 75 minutes Columbia at first couldn't get through the defense, but then a pass and a kick to goal actually rebounded slightly off of the keeper for an own goal.
After that Congo needed to respond, but it was still mostly Colombia playing at their goal. At 85 minutes they nearly got to a goal but the keeper kept it out, and after a mad scramble the defense kicked it away.
Congo had its best chance at 90 minutes but the kick went wide of the goal. They got a corner kick, but the keeper got the ball again.
Another Colombian player, after a run in with a Congolese player, got a yellow card at 95 minutes. But that was it for both teams.
Switzerland versus Canada. Not sure what was going on at 30 minutes with yellow cards going to both teams for a delay regarding a free kick. It was a really bizarre interaction, with the Canadian player interfering with Switzerland's free kick and then simulating a foul.
At 45 minutes Switzerland came up one side and then made two passes to someone right in front of goal, who had no one but the keeper in front of him. He shot as he was charged.
At 56 minutes, Switzerland managed to get one past the keeper in a similar situation to the last goal.
Canada finally got on the board at 74 minutes as they did a long pass to a runner nearly in front of the goal. He crossed it to a teammate running in, who was able to shoot it past the keeper who had come out to challenge the first Canadian.
A mass tumble of people at 90 minutes as Canada tried again for a second goal. Then they almost got it, but the header was too slow and went straight into the hands of the keeper at 95 minutes.
Bosnia and Herzegovina versus Qatar. BH was challenging out of the gate. At 28 minutes some fancy footwork kept the ball out of the hands of the defenders and they were able to shoot it into the Qatari goal from the edge of the penalty box. Went straight into the goal before the keeper could get it. A really nice goal.
Then at 33 minutes BH was approaching goal at the side, receiving a wide distance cross which he kicked directly towards goal. It rebounded off the foot of a defender and bounced into goal underneath the keeper's arms.
Qatar was lucky that a kick towards their goal was just off, bouncing off the post at 38 minutes. At 41 minutes Qatar then made a run through a loose group of BH defenders, crossed to the far side of the goal where the ball was kicked back, so that a running Qatari player could send it in to the center of the goal. It seemed like the BH keeper actually got some fingers on it but not strongly enough to keep it out.
Qatar got a yellow card at 77 minutes for a foul on BH. The BH goal at 79 minutes was such a scramble. First it went to a player in between two Qatari defenders. Then it was kicked back to another player in between two defenders and he pushed it out just far enough that a third BH player was able to circle around the Qatari players and shoot it into goal, right at the keeper, who could probably barely see where it was until it was bouncing off him into goal.
I'm actually not even sure how that happened, because he was just outside the goal, but it seemed to hit his right arm and run along it. For sure the play defined the motto, never give up
Qatar's big problem just seemed to be a lack of finesse when it came to targeting the goal.
Morocco versus Haiti. At 9 minutes Haiti skirted around Moroccan defenders, and kicked the ball to a teammate standing in front of goal. The keeper moved forward and fell towards the ball, but the Haitian player tapped it backwards into the goal.
At 38 minutes Morocco finally had its goal. Running along the side into the penalty area he crossed it to goal, but the Haitian keeper hit it up. Unfortunately as it came down, a Moroccan player was there to kick it in.
At 42 minutes, Haiti took the lead again with a beautiful kick from well outside the penalty area past a leaping keeper.
But then at 45 minutes, Morocco equalized. A lone Moroccan player running down the side crossed to an approaching Moroccan player who kicked it straight into goal.
For sure that half was more exciting than the entire England vs Ghana game.
Things remained fairly lively until 77 minutes when a corner kick by Morocco bounced off a Moroccan player, and then to another who brought it down and was able to bounce it to go right past the keeper and two defenders standing in goal.
The fourth goal was just some errors. The Moroccan players had the ball forced off the field by a Haitian defender. However the Moroccan player put it back into play and crossed it to another player in front of goal, who shot it in. I don't understand how it could have stood, it seemed as clear out to me as it did to the Haitian player.
Haiti was able to get a free kick, but the Moroccan keeper dove to his left and was able to keep it out of goal. It seemed like a lively game with plenty to keep the fans engaged.
Watched Scotland versus Brasil in real time. Brazil got its first goal 7 minutes in. Egregious error by the Scottish keeper in being too slow to pass to a Scottish player who was still in the penalty box. A Brazilian player ran up, intercepted the ball, and passed it to a teammate who sidestepped the keeper and tapped the ball into goal.
Another overly casual handling of the ball by the Scottish side at 21 minutes saw another case of it being stolen by a Brazilian player and then just shot into goal as the keeper came way out to charge him. The goal apparently did not stand though.
The third goal was a mad scramble. First a Brazilian player tried to get a hold of it and slid it out of the penalty box, then another Brazilian player tried to get it and fell over. Then a third player shot it from the corner of the penalty box into goal, probably off the tips of the Scottish keeper's fingers.
Scotland had a great chance at 49 minutes, but the header into goal went to the hands of the keeper.
Brazil's third official goal came at 58 minutes when a single player stalled at the edge of the penalty box, so that a teammate could catch up. He then passed it to him and that player evaded a Scottish defender and the leaping grab of the keeper to sail into the edge of goal.
At 63 minutes, Scotland had another excellent chance heading down into goal, and the Brazilian keeper barely kept it out.
I thought it was amusing how at 75 minutes, when Neymar finally came out, the commentators said that the crowd was happy, everyone was happy, and Neymar was back. Of course the Telemundo commentators were not particularly interested in Scotland, and with Brazil three up, it was just a nice lounging by the pool mood to watch the rest of the game.
By 87 minutes, the real tension came from the commentators reporting that Venezuela had suffered a 7.1 Richter earthquake.
At 92 minutes, Scotland nearly got themselves on the scoreboard. A throw in from the side ended up in a scrum in front of the Brazilian goal. A Scottish player was able to run to the side and kick to a teammate in the center who nearly got it past the keeper.
But that was it, the end of the game was called soon after.
