I've been thinking about getting a new pen to celebrate my birthday. There are a few that I've been eyeballing, mostly by Nahvalur. But then I checked the weight, and... holy shit, they're so heavy!

I remember that I didn't like the Pilot Metropolitan because it was heavy; around 24g. The Nahvalur Fathom is 28g. That's... hmm. A bit much.

On the other hand the reason I'm considering that one is because I want to keep it at work, where it would mostly be used for to-do lists. The large ink capacity would be advantageous in this situation.

The lightest pen I've been considering is the Sailor PGS, which is around 16.8g, pretty much the same as my Jinhao 82, which I really like.

Ehhhh I'll think about it some more.

Things I did this past weekend:

- Did a whole bunch of running around, doing errands
- Took a very long walk around the neighbourhood to check out some flyers posted on bus shelters; I'd been worried that they were white supremacist flyers that I'd have to remove, but they were just lost pet notices. I was relieved. There has been more outspoken racism in the community than usual, and I found some of the supremacist flyers downtown last month. So.
- Went to the Pride craft 'n chat and did 2 watercolour landscape postcards for Postcrossing. I'm still very new to it and trying to decide how many postcards I want to send typically, taking travel time and expense into account.
- Rewatched The Birdcage for the first time in many many years. The first time I saw it, I did not have any knowledge of what a drag show was, though obviously I understood the general idea from the film. Watching it this time around was a much different experience.
- Made some plans to go Geocaching next week, when I have a day off. There is one cache in particular that I'm curious about; it hasn't been logged since 2024. Is it because it went missing, or is it because it's in an out-of-the-way part of the city? I'm going to try to find out!

Sooo today was Canada Day! And I had the day off.

I took the bus downtown. The Multicultural Society was hosting a free pancake breakfast, so of course I was up for that. By the time I got there, they were winding down but still with plenty left over and were giving out extra packages. So, I was able to bring some home to freeze for later.

The weather was not too bad. Not super hot, anyway. No rain. A little smokey, but that's business as usual.

The parade was all right! I mean, you have to calibrate your expectations, considering it's Fort Mac, but it was still a good time. The Filipino-Canadian Association went all out, with multiple floats and some really impressive dancers in traditional clothing. Alberta Wildfire made an appearance with a really nice float. The local McDonalds did a surprisingly really good, high-effort entry, with floats and costumes and ribbon dancers. ?! (On the one hand, ew, big corporation etc. On the other hand, like, it's all local staff putting in the effort to do a nice parade entry. So there is that. ...I hope they got paid though.) And also the military museum had a whole-ass TANK on the flatbed of a truck, that was pretty cool.

The only downer was an evangelical coming up to me to proselytize. I removed myself from the situation and went to stand somewhere else, but I'm honestly still kind of mad about it. Not cool, yo.

My parents invited themselves over this evening. I wasn't thrilled about that. However, they brought Chinese takeout with them, so overall I'm going to consider it a net win.

I realized that the clothes I wore to work today don't look good on me. But I can't tell if they actually look bad, or if I'm just in one of those moods where I hate everything about my physical appearance and also life in general.

We'll see how I feel tomorrow, I guess.

+ I rewatched Trolljegeren this evening. I'd forgotten how much I like this film! I'm usually kind of 'eh' about found footage, but I feel like it's employed really well in this particular case, when it's in the service of a mockumentary about troll hunting. Apparently. There are a lot of plot points I completely forgot, so it was like watching it for the first time. It's such a fun movie, and of course with the added bonus of copious beautiful landscape shots (obligatory). I think sometimes it gets mislabeled as horror, but to me it falls more under fantasy. Scary fantasy, sure, but yeah. ...Also I just read that at one point the rights had been purchased to do an American remake, and I just, what. This is such a very very Norwegian film; the thought of a US remake is all sorts of No.

+ Anyway, the reason I decided to rewatch it is that I found a notebook in which I was writing a Hetalia x Trolljegeren crossover. It's very easy to mash these fandoms together, because of course Norway would be aware of what is going on with the Troll Security Service. I started it some time in 2013, and unfortunately I didn't make any plot notes, so I don't remember where I was going with it. So... hopefully some time soon I will read through what I wrote and try to remember the plot, or failing that, think of a new plot. I do remember that it was going to be gen, and I think that would be a nice change of pace for me, as it's been a while since I did anything like that.

+ Speaking of writing, [community profile] iddyiddybangbang usually opens signups around the second week of July if I remember correctly. Looking forward to participating this year; I think I'll do my FTH for it, as that will give me a good deadline to get it done. Is anyone else thinking about signing up?

The more time goes by, the more I find that I don't actually like people very much.

Trying to decide which fic to write next. I'm kind of at loose ends. There are a lot of works that I should edit, but I want to write.

No edit, only write.

- Took dad out for breakfast. We went to a newish chain up on the other side of town. The food was pretty good; would go again. We went to the car show after that.

- Dillydally'd with the rest of the day. Could have got more things done. Did not.

- Finished my fic for Crack the WIP. Very happy about that. I re-read it, and it's not terrible. Serviceable, anyway. Surprises me, though, that this is the first complete fic of the year.

- Will start typing up my FTH fic soon. Depending on the length, I'll try to post it for IIBB. Need to check if it meets the minimum though.

I went to the annual pride fair yesterday. Whoo!

Honestly, I was in one of those moods where I was like "Ugh, I don't want to go anywhere or do anything, I kind of want to skip it". BUT I also know that it's important to show up to things. So.

It was in a different location this year; previously it was at the Heritage Shipyard, which is a really interesting location in terms of layout and vibe. However, as Pride gets bigger, this location was getting a little cramped. And also this year it's closed for maintenance I think. So, this year it was at the Heritage Park outdoor museum instead. Man, I haven't been down there since I was a kid. Pretty much looks the same as before. The big upside though is that it has a lot of room. The parking sucks, but there's parking available at a nearby high school, so I just walked. The Pride org had organized a golf cart shuttle between the festival and the parking lot for people who need it, which was really thoughtful of them.

Unfortunately I hear that the Park will be closed next year (for maintenance?) so WB Pride will need to find another location again... we'll see what they come up with.

Anyway. I listened to some music, said hi to some acquaintances, watched the Pride org give out some awards (including to two people I know, yay, good for them) and watched a drag performance. The drag performance was awesome! Ella Lamoureux came up from Kelowna; she was here last year as well, or possibly the year before. Her style is really delightful and her costumes are top notch. And there was also Dayna Hart, up from Calgary - I don't think she's performed at our Pride before. Her performance was incredibly dynamic and complex, cartwheels and flips and everything, I have no idea how she managed to do that in heels, holy shit. Really really impressive; hopefully she'll come back up here another time.

Anyway... I'm glad that I put aside the "ugh I don't wanna" feeling and went down; it was worth the trouble for the drag performance, certainly. :V

I've been reading a lot of trash lately, including romance novels with brainless protagonists, asshole love interests, mediocre plotting, and too much stereotypical heterosexual nonsense. (Not inserting any titles here, as there's nothing worth mentioning).

So I decided, "I am going to read something completely different as a palate cleanser".

Started Moby Dick today. First impression: This is somewhat long-winded, but already fascinating.

I have the Friday booked off. I planned to spend it doing nothing, but instead I'm going to end up running errands and having coffee with someone from judo.

I have to get my passport renewed. I cringed at having to ask people to be references, but they agreed to it. Now I just need to fill out the form. I guess I just hate imposing on people. Ah, well.

The novels I'm currently reading are not to my taste. I'd picked up something light in hopes that it would be a palate cleanser compared to the "horrible people being horrible" stuff I was reading previously, but the protagonists are so deeply stupid that it's pretty hard going. I think the next book will have to be something with a clever protagonist. Maybe I'll just re-read The Count of Monte Cristo.

Just finished True Detective: Night Country. This is season 4 of this anthology series; this one is set in Alaska in winter. A murder takes place just as the sun sets for the last time for a good while, and it has connections to another murder several years before.

No surprises here, I am very into the vibe. The endless night. The cold and gloom. Jodie Foster is incredibly hot as detective Danvers, holy shit. And the vibe between Danvers and Navarro is amazing. They can't stand each other, but they're the only people who can understand each other. The ~chemistry~ between those two, man.

I saw someone compare this series to The Terror and like, I can see where they're coming from. Obviously there is a big difference between settings, but there's that "it's cold and dark and everything is miserable" thing going on, also ominous polar bears, frozen people, vaguely supernatural vibes, etc. And also a mildly antagonistic relationship between the two leads that later becomes... less antagonistic.

[Edit] Though now that I give it more thought, a more obvious parallel is to Fortitude, at least in terms of plot and vibes and what's going on with the science-not-science. But in terms of dynamic between the leads - yeah, that reads closer to The Terror. [/edit]

I'm going to cut the rest because it's kind of spoilery.

Anyway. Good series! Glad I watched it! Kind of weird that I tend to default to "freezing in the arctic" type shows during the summer, though. :Va

- Decided to do fuck all today. Like, I could have gone to yoga, but I decided not to. I did go on a nice long walk though. And also popped in to the farmer's market, though I didn't buy anything.

- Wrote up some Postcrossing postcards. Kind of wondering if I should put together a notebook to log my postcrossing stuff. But then again, the details on the actual site are pretty, well, detailed. So no need, really.

- Did some dogsitting. Bro gave me a Sbux gift card as thanks. Whooo.

- Speaking of which, the Starbucks downtown did some redecorating. I'm not sure if I like it or not. The seating is very changed; the chairs are more like living room chairs and the tables are very low. Nice for having a chat or reading a book, but not good for writing or doing homework. I think that might be on purpose. They also added a lot of new artwork, and it's actually quite nice.

- Anyway, I'm still kind of frustrated with the lack of coffee shops with decent seating in this town. A new place downtown opened on Friday, but they're takeout only. Again. I don't go to coffee shops to have coffee; I go to coffee shops to have some place other than my apartment to write or even just chill. Blah.
