Hull B

A medium freighter manufactured by MISC

The Hull B is the only medium freighter of the Hull series of cargo ships developed by Musashi Industrial and Starflight Concern. It represents a more durable choice frequently contrasted with other vessels of comparable cargo capacity. However, while those ships are designed for extended-range exploration and various functions, the Hull B serves solely as a cargo transport. They are commonly utilized as corporate support vessels, and it is not unusual to observe multiple ships in diverse liveries during a single journey. In contrast to the other larger vessels in the series, it possesses the ability to land on a planet while fully loaded.[1][2][3]

Features

edit
Extension and Compaction
The Hull B features a retractable cargo spindle that maximizes surface area when extended and protects it when retracted, allowing for landings in tighter spaces. It is the largest model in the series capable of landing with the spindle extended.[2]
Cargo
The ship boasts a cargo capacity of 512 SCU, with the ability of transporting as many as 16 32-SCU containers.[1]
Tractor Beams
The vessel is equipped with a pair of forward facing remotely operated Size 2 tractor beams that facilitate the efficient transfer of the substantial cargo it is capable of transporting.[1]
Stowage
Inside the ship there is are two personal storage lockers that can each hold up to 1000k µSCU of various items. There are also two suit lockers, however as of Alpha 4.8.2 this functionality has yet to be implemented.[1]
Weapon/Utility racks
A specialized FPS weapons rack is available, capable of accommodating two Size 2 weapons, along with three Size 1 pistols and/or medguns. Additionally, there exists a dedicated utility rack that can support two Size 2 and two Size 1 utility tools.[1]
Living quarters
A living space that is minimalistic yet functional has been designed to accommodate a maximum of two crew members during extended missions. This living quarters comprises of beds, a bathroom, and kitchenette.[2]
Defense
The Hull B is not entirely without defense thanks to its two forward Size 3 gun hardpoints, a dorsal turret with two additional Size 3 hardpoints, and its racks that can hold up to eight Size 3 missiles in addition to its industrial standard shields.[1]

Flaws

edit
Limited coverage
The Hull B's single defensive turret is placed in a recessed location atop the forward hull where it is afforded very little weapon depression due to interfering geometry, and in the aft only elevated targets can be engaged - especially when the cargo spindle is in use. While this placement allows the turret to support the pilot offensively and has wide coverage of the dorsal hemisphere, the ship is vulnerable in its ventral hemisphere and can't defend against pursuers slotted into the direct aft of the ship.[4]

Lore

edit

For most of the concern’s history, the majority of MISC’s business has come from the production output of its heavy industrial division. MISC-HI is chiefly responsible for the Hull series range of configurable bulk transport spacecraft that have become ubiquitous in UEE space. These sturdy, modular hulls are the basis for the majority of Human corporate shipping. Their unexpected popularity among the Xi'an has spawned an unlikely business relationship (and a string of imitators on the other side of the border).

When the line launched in 2802, four standard models ranged in size from the efficient Hull A to the gargantuan Hull D. The Hull series quickly revolutionized interstellar freight, leading to the standardization of dockyards and cargo processes around the UEE. This led to long-ranging knock-on effects, including over a dozen outside companies being founded or significantly shifting focus to support the Hull design, such as Argo Astronautics launching its MPUV line of short-range cargo ferries. In 2820, MISC developed a fifth ‘super-freighter’, the Hull E, which has since become the de facto interplanetary bulk goods transporter, with docks around the galaxy moving cargo containers back and forth from the huge ships around the clock[5]

“I know it’s a cliche, but when I started my company I had nothing but the spacesuit on my back. We had this great idea to overclock laser weapons and sell them to enthusiasts… but the biggest loan the bank would give us wouldn’t even cover a ‘MAX. I saved up enough extra creds to afford a Hull B [instead of an A] knowing it’d be years before I was able to fill it up. Long story short, we had leased a second and then a third before the year was out. I still have that first ‘worker B,’ outfitted as a mobile office for the corp!”

Development

edit
2015-04-25 The Hull-B was initially introduced as a conceptual ship alongside the Hull-A, Hull-D, and Hull-E.[6]
2015-05-11 The Hull series of ships including the B variant was originally concepted by Jim Martin.[7]
2025-09-03 Following its updated concept being approved, the Hull B was put into pre-production.[8]
2025-10-01 It progressed well into Whitebox development, with its exterior receiving adjustments for the gate requirements.[9]
2025-11-01 The Hull B is currently being prepared for its whitebox review, with the final touches being made to ensure it hits the required functionality criteria.[10]
2025-11-27 During the episode of Star Citizen Live: Lots of Ship Talk, it was revealed that the cargo capacity of the Hull B has been increased from 384 to 512 SCU, and its design has transitioned from the conventional Hull series + shape to an X shape, enabling it to land while fully loaded.[11]
2026-01-21 The ship passed its whitebox review, entering into greybox.[12]
2026-02-04 The ship passed the greybox review and entered deep into LOD0.[13]
2026-04-08 The ship entered flight ready with the launch of Alpha 4.7.1, and can be pledged.[14]
